October in the Atelier: Autumn Drama, Subtle Spookiness & Why Christmas Begins Now

Can we just pause for a second? October is finally here, and I couldn’t be happier.

There’s an electric shift in the air right now. The evenings are getting properly chilly, London is wrapped in that gorgeous autumn golden hour, and—let’s be completely honest—my head is already ninety percent full of fairy lights, baubles, and festive styling.

Over on high-street shelves, the displays can get a bit wild this time of year—neon plastic pumpkins wrestling for shelf space with tinsel. But for those of us who live and breathe interior curation, October is something much more decadent. It’s the season of moody, layered glamour.

A Nod to the Dark & Dramatic: Elevated Halloween

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I have a huge soft spot for Halloween, provided it’s done properly.

Forget the disposable kitsch. For me, Halloween styling is all about theatrical, gothic elegance. We’ve brought in a select few artisan Halloween pieces this season that feel genuinely special—think dramatic character figures, moody midnight accents, and intricate heirloom craftsmanship that commands attention on a console table or fireplace hearth.

The beauty of collecting high-end pieces like this is that they don’t get packed away on the 1st of November. A magnificent sculpted figure, paired with antiqued candelabras, deep charcoal or plum velvet, and warm ambient lighting, effortlessly anchors your home right through the darker months. It’s playful, it’s theatrical, and it sets the stage for the indulgence of winter.

The Big Question: Is It Really Too Early for Christmas?

I get asked this every single October: "aren't you starting a bit early?"

My answer is always a firm no—and any true collector will tell you why.

True holiday luxury is never a frantic, last-minute sprint in December. When you wait until the tree is already standing, you’re left scrambling for whatever is left over. Curating in October gives you the luxury of time: time to fall in love with a colour story, plan your vignettes, and most importantly, secure the limited-edition showstoppers before they disappear.

Our collections from Goodwill Belgium, Mark Roberts, and Katherine’s Collection are made in strictly limited artisan allocations. Once they’re claimed by collectors across the globe, that’s it for the year. Reserving your statement fairies, regal tabletop centrepieces, and jewel-encrusted accents now means you can relax knowing your home’s festive drama is locked in.

My October Styling Notes

If you want to start layering that seasonal magic into your rooms right now without putting the tree up just yet, here’s how I do it:

  • Embrace the Shadows & Scents: Kill the harsh overhead lights. Clustered sculptural candles, smoky amber glass, and warm, low-level glow instantly turn a living room into an intimate sanctuary.

  • Layer Heavy, Sensual Textures: Out with the summer linens. Bring out heavyweight velvets, embroidered trims, and tactile wool throws.

  • Curate One Focal Point: Dedicate a console or mantel to a dramatic autumn display. Place your favourite statement piece—whether it’s a whimsical Halloween character or an opulent autumn-toned figure—alongside dried botanicals, twisted branches, and warm micro-lights.
